    AutoWeek Reviews the All-New S60

Here's a quick sampling of Roger Hart's "Flash Drive" of the S60:

"After sampling a preproduction car on the twisting, undulating roads of the Taunus hills near Frankfurt, Germany, we can say their effort was worthwhile. With the turbocharged six underhood--the only engine variant to be offered when the car goes on sale in the United States this fall--the S60 is fun to drive. A six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch gearbox would make the car even more fun to drive, but simply saying "Volvo" and "fun-to-drive" in the same sentence is certainly a good step forward.

"The suspension is stiff, not brutally so, but you notice very little body roll and hardly any brake drive. Jounce and rebound are very well handled, giving the car a solid, secure feel on a variety of road surfaces. The net result is a car that will surprise those who might think of Volvo as being the equivalent of a European Buick. We all know the Euro Buick is, of course, an Opel Insignia.

"Volvo knows convincing customers the S60 is a driver's car, not just a safe cocoon in which to haul precious cargo--aka family members--is a tall order, so Volvo priced the car competitively. At $38,550, the S60 packs more features and more horsepower than similar-sized cars offered from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. Start ticking off options, and you can easily push the price of the car north of $45,000. Still, the S60 offers one of the safest cars built in a handsome package that is fun to drive and extremely comfortable. The interior design is elegantly simply, with just two round dials in the instrument panel fitted into a dash with a sweeping design reminiscent of a road-course layout. The center stack, topped by a seven-inch display screen, is again simple and straightforward. And Volvo continues to put in its cars some of the most comfortable seats available in a car today.

Who said safe can't be fun?"

Volvo Announces Pricing of All-New 2011 S60 Sport Sedan

The sportiest Volvo ever arrives late this year with a starting price of just $37,700

Rockleigh, N.J. (May 10, 2010) -  Volvo Cars of North America, LLC (VCNA) today announced pricing for the all-new 2011 Volvo S60 sport sedan of $37,700*. The all-new S60 packs more style, performance and technology than many of its competitors, but at a substantially lower price when showroom equipped. The all-new 2011 Volvo S60 beats a showroom equipped 2011 BMW 335i xDrive by a whopping $7,150, and a Mercedes-Benz C350 by an impressive $1,765. The all-new 2011 Volvo S60 sport sedan goes on sale in late 2010.

The all-new 2011 Volvo S60 is included in Volvo segment leading Safe + Secure Coverage Plan. The program provides best-in-class coverage, offers the lowest cost of luxury ownership (according to IntelliChoice) and has been a major contributor to Volvo's recent sales success. Specifically, it includes:

    • 5 years/60,000 miles of New Car Warranty
    • 5 years/60,000 miles of Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance
    • 5 years/60,000 miles of Wear and Tear Coverage
    • 5 years/Unlimited miles of Volvo On Call Roadside Assistance.

"The all-new S60 has been a long time coming," said VCNA President and CEO, Doug Speck, "but it's been worth the wait. With 300 horsepower, standard all-wheel drive, its stunning design and Volvo's latest technology, it's the kind of car that will put a smile on any driving enthusiast's face." Today's pricing announcement gives the competition pause for thought. "When you consider you can own an extremely well-equipped 2011 Volvo S60 for only $41,400, and that you will pay nothing to repair or maintain the all-new S60 for 5 years or 60,000 miles, it really becomes a no-brainer," continued Speck.

    Competitive Analysis

The premium sport-sedan market is about as competitive as it gets. The all-new Volvo S60, however, is raising the bar several notches in terms of value when comparing showroom-equipped models.

The all-new Volvo S60 sport sedan also comes standard with a new infotainment system which includes a 7-inch high-definition color monitor. The screen is accessed through intuitive steering-wheel mounted controls so the driver's hands are always where they should be. Information regarding the audio system, in-dash DVD video player, climate and vehicle settings are easily monitored and controlled through a thumb-activated rotator.

Other standard features offered only in the all-new S60 include an enhanced six-speed Geartronic transmission for quicker shifts, 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned Dynamic chassis, speed sensitive steering with driver-selectable settings, Bluetooth, HD Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio with a complimentary six-month subscription.

Continuing to introduce groundbreaking technology, Volvo will also offer Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake in the all-new S60. In the U.S., approximately 4,700 pedestrian fatalities occur each year and that's a number Volvo is hoping to reduce with the availability of Pedestrian Detection.

Pedestrian Detection actively helps the driver avoid accidents. Volvo's radar- and camera-based system can detect pedestrians in front of the car, warn the driver if anyone walks out into its path - and then automatically activate the S60's full braking power if the driver fails to respond in time. This world-first technology can help the driver avoid a collision with a pedestrian.

On the safety front, the all-new Volvo S60 comes standard with City Safety, an auto braking system not offered on any of its competition. City Safety automatically stops the S60 if the car in front unexpectedly stops. The system is active from 2 - 18 mph and is designed for heavily congested urban environments.

Despite the all-new S60 sport sedan being exceedingly well equipped right out of the gate, there are a number of attractive option packages and single options available.

Volvo XC60 Wins Prestigious 2010 International Truck of the Year Award

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 2, 2009) - The Volvo XC60 was named 2010 International Truck of the Year today by the International Car of the Year (ICOTY) jury. The award was given to Doug Speck, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, LLC at the Volvo display at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. The XC60 was chosen over 10 new crossovers, SUVs and trucks by a distinguished panel of top automotive journalists.

"This ties a very pretty bow around what's been a truly amazing year for Volvo," commented Speck. "The XC60 has not only been recognized by the media but it's been extremely well received by our customers." The 2010 XC60 has helped VCNA earn six consecutive months of year-over-year sales increases since June.

The XC60 was chosen the winner from a panel of 19 automotive media from around the U.S. and Canada representing top newspapers, magazines and websites. The jurors must consider the ICOTY mission of "honoring vehicles that reflect an emotional connection between car and consumer lifestyles" when making their nominations. "The ICOTY awards are not centered on power and performance," said Courtney Caldwell, ICOTY's creator and executive producer. "It's about how cars reflect our personalities, lifestyles and self image, an attitude most consumers identify with."

Once approved by the ICOTY nominating committee, the awards jury then bases their decision on a number of important criteria: The vehicle must be new or substantially revised, it must be offered for sale to the general public by the judging deadline of November 16, 2009, and may not have been previously considered for the ICOTY Awards.

The International Truck of the Year award marks the 20th accolade the Volvo XC60 has received since sales began in Europe in late 2008. The XC60 is the first vehicle to offer City Safety as standard equipment. This unique Volvo technology can help the driver avoid frontal collisions at low speed. If the driver is about to drive into the rear of a vehicle and does not react in time, the XC60 will apply the brakes by itself.

Consumer Reports released the results of its 2008 Car Reliability Survey (published in the December 2008 issue) and Volvo was the best-performing European luxury brand! Volvo ranks higher than Porsche, BMW, Audi, Saab, and Mercedes-Benz.

The survey is comprised of Consumer Reports subscribers' experiences with 1.4 million vehicles. Respondents reported any serious problems they had with their vehicles in 17 trouble spots during the previous 12 months, which allows the magazine to provide predicted-reliability ratings for new cars. Only those models that had 100 or more responses were included in the study.

The magazine recognized Volvo for their continued climb in the quality ranks. Eight different Volvo models rated above average in reliability and several made the most Recommended list.
